Official Review: When to Call a Therapist
When to Call a Therapist by Robert C. Ciampi is a non-fiction book providing information and guidance to individuals who are interested in or considering starting therapy.
After the initial introduction, Ciampi begins to tell his story of how he struggled with mental health in his late teens and early twenties. The story follows him as a young man trying to find his calling while at the same time trying to support himself. Once he eventually decided to commit to therapy, he found that his life improved drastically. Not only did it improve his mental health, but it set him off on the path to earning his bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in social work. The best piece of advice that he says he can give is to start sooner rather than later.
One of the most valuable chapters in this book is ‘How to Get the Most Out of Therapy’ in which Ciampi offers practical tips and advice to the reader on how to understand how therapy works and learn about and accept their responsibility as the client or patient. He also explains how the space in which the therapy takes place should become a sanctuary to the person. Besides this, he addresses topics such as medication which may be used in conjunction with therapy and the ‘aha’ moment which often comes when one does not expect it.
The book is further divided into a number of chapters that explore various reasons why one might choose to do therapy. These include topics such as marital counselling, anxiety, depression, anger management, substance abuse, stress, workplace interactions, assertiveness issues, adolescent counselling, abuse and neglect, and existential angst. With such a wide variety of topics, I was thoroughly impressed with the extensive knowledge and advice that Ciampi offers.
I have rated When to Call a Therapist by Robert C. Ciampi 4 out of 4 stars. I noticed no spelling or grammar mistakes and found the book to be edited in a professional manner. This book also has so much valuable information that more people should learn about and I enjoyed reading it immensely. Furthermore, I could find no fault in it and believe it deserves the highest rating.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering therapy as well as people who are curious about therapy and want to learn more about it. If you’re looking for that extra little push, this is it.
