[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Journeys of Life Volume 2" by Sabinah Adewole.]
Journeys of Life Volume 2 by Sabinah Adewole is a collection of poems that are written to encourage readers, as well as to share the poet’s experiences. The poet reveals many short poems in this book that discuss topics related to God, perseverance, and equality. The poet aims to make her experiences and emotions known to readers through a creative, informal, and poetic style.
This book is the second volume of poems of the author, however, the reader does not feel lost when reading the poems if he/she has not read the first volume of poems. The first poems in this book refer to the poet’s journey to Israel, and the poet writes about some of her experiences in the Holy Land, while she shares some Biblical stories that she cherishes. Moreover, the poet writes about various topics, such as diversity, love, and equality, after being stimulated by an event. The poet likes to write about small things that occur in her everyday life, such as the people she saw on a train or a trip.
There were many positive attributes in this volume of poems. More analytically, the author writes about what stimulated her to write each poem, while she also writes the date that she composed each poem. This creates a better picture of each poem in the reader’s mind, helping him/her understand the poet’s thought process, as well as the deeper meaning of the poem. Furthermore, what I liked most about this book was that it contained various forms of poems, some longer than others, thereby creating a beautiful, creative display of the poet’s poetic abilities. The different types of poems also create diversity and interest in the book, grasping the reader’s attention.
Nonetheless, this book also contained a few negative characteristics. More specifically, I encountered numerous typographical, grammatical, and spelling errors in this book. The number of errors undermine the poet’s credibility and professionalism, making her poems hard to read, which is why the book must undergo another round of editing. Additionally, what I disliked the most was that the poems lacked creativity, originality, and imagination in some cases, creating a boring and monotonous tone in the book.
This book is best-suited for Christian readers that enjoy poetry related to general topics. The poems in this book do not belong to a particular genre, therefore any lover of poetry can read this book. Christians are likely to find this book most appealing, as it contains references to the Bible and Christian beliefs. Atheists and non-Christians may not wish to read this book after knowing it contains Christian elements.
Selectively, I rate this book with 2 out of 4 stars. The reason for not giving this book a higher rating was that it contained a vast number of errors, and it was boring in several cases. Nevertheless, a lower rating would be unfair as the poet has successfully created a diverse array of poems that encourage the reader.
