Gone are the days where being an expert at roughing it in the outdoors is admirable. Now, things are changing – it is the Indoorsman’s turn to reign. And in this guide, it is evident that without the correct knowledge, that the indoors can be just be just as perilous as the outdoors, if not worse. For the indoors is equipped with many obstacles, from the assembly of furniture, to the perfect snack to eat in front of the TV or why Cats are not the pet of choice for the Avid Indoorsman.

The Ultimate Guide to the Avid Indoorsman is a humorous, essential manual for life written by John Driver. Typically, I usually stay as far away from non-fiction books as possible, choosing to rather get lost in imaginary worlds about mythical characters. However, there is something so relatable in the premise of this book that I decided to give it a go.

The book is mainly about why it is better to be indoors than outdoors - however, it also details how it is important not to underestimate the “dangers” of the indoors. In the guide, John Driver advises us on how to deal with every type of indoor and outdoor emergency under the sun, ranging from indoor plumbing to social interaction. What this guide really is a guide to life, the instructions we all wish we’d received upon birth.

John Driver’s take on what is needed to survive in today’s world is not only funny, but also offers a sharp contrast to how far we’ve come as the human race. The book is full of brief yet intriguing history lessons, as well as quintessential life lessons on how to deal with everyday situations such as how to deal with wild animals as well as how not to appear as a socially awkward hermit. The author’s ability to also bring comic relief no matter the topic or situation is truly something to be admired. As you read, you don’t feel as though you are learning – you’re too busy laughing and nodding your head at how accurate and relatable the situations are.

John Driver does an amazing job with turning boring facts into understandable yet relevant information. He does a great job with disguising the fact that put any other way, the information in this book isn’t very stimulating. He tells of everyday situations, and how to overcome them in order to become the Avid Indoorsman, master of our domain. He offers insight into both the indoor and outdoor world, and proving the reigning opinion – indoors are way better than outdoors.

I loved reading this eye opening guide to the indoors, which is why I happily award it the rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It was well edited, well put together and a pleasure to read. If one is extremely partial to the outdoors, and feels that they already know all there is to know about surviving happily in both the indoors and outdoors, then perhaps this guide is not for you. However, for those who love to learn new things in a fun, comical fashion and who would love to become Avid Indoorsmen, then this is most definitely the book to read.
