[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "An A-Hole Gets In Shape" by Andy Ostrom.]
This book is a part of the series for Etiquette For A-Holes. This series talks about those small things that make you (or should I say the author?) angry in your daily life. The slow drivers on the freeway or the aggressive line cutters in the coffee shop. These kind of people, who are termed as A-Holes, pop out in your life when you least expect them. This particular book A-Hole Gets In Shape has been written by Andy Ostrom and illustrated by Jerry Hasse.
This is not for those who are looking for ways to lose weight. On the contrary it for those who don’t understand why they cannot lose their weight. Each one of us try different ways – some hit the gym while others try all fad diets. But do they work?
Ostrom pours a lot of sarcasm on the people who want to lose weight but they don’t have the will power to stick onto it. But he injects the truth with loads of humor. But be ready for some hard hitting truths. Anyone who has tried to lose weight will be able to find themselves in at least one of the instances mentioned. If you are lucky, you might see yourself in all of them. ( Well, I doubt whether you will call yourself lucky or pretend it is not you) . But if you do find yourself in every line of the book consider yourself famous since someone has written a book about you. (I consoled myself like that.)
My first reaction to the book was what the heck is this? I don’t read such things. Well, I don’t, because nobody wants to face the truth in such a manner. If any other diet writer would have told me these things, politely, I would not have listened. But Ostrom makes you listen.
Take it from a person who has been there and done it, each line was meant for me. ( I need to ask Mr. Ostrom if we have met before) How can a writer tell you step by step of all the failed trials I have gone through? The fad diets, the gym scenario and even the slimming pills – all hit the mark of a dieter’s failed attempts.
Don’t expect him to tell you what you should do but you sure can expect to learn what you need to reach your goal. It is just one ingredient which is free and easily available . But as a dieter can you find it?
The best thing I liked about this book was its humor. It was a laugh out loud moment for me. A very serious topic covered in a humorous way and for that I would certainly give this book a 3 out of 4 stars. I would retain 1 star back for the prude in me who had to cover her eyes due to some of the choice of words. But some of the readers may argue that it is needed in that context. Well readers, that only you can decide after reading this rib tickling satire.
