Hiding in Water: A Memoir Based Mostly in Reality by Katherine Lippa is a book about Katherine herself when she was growing up and how unusual her family was and the strange beliefs they pushed onto her. Her parents were divorced at a young age, leaving her and her older brother living with her mother in Maine and her deadbeat father somewhere away from them claiming to be a prophet from another planet. Different parts of her family had different religions, ranging from extreme Christians to her father believing in enlightenment and telepathy and psychics.

She wrote this book based on her journal from when she was younger, and has pieced back more specific instances from what she can remember and her perspective on the events happening then. She includes pieces of history that happened at the time and how they affected her growing up, such as the hostages in Iran, politics, scandals, and potential wars.

The overall theme of this book is to believe in yourself and in others, which she learned as she was growing up. Her father had her believing she had psychic powers and she just couldn’t tap into them yet, and she felt like a failure the older she got without being able to do anything psychically, except when she wished someone dead and they died in a crash shortly after. Eventually she learned that all of these instances where something bad actually happened was just coincidences and she had nothing to actually do with them, making her feel better. The story goes through her life and shows how she gains her confidence even with her hard upbringing, including a brother who threatened to kill her and tried to force himself on her.

This book was very entertaining and memorable because of the extreme views some of the characters in the book have, such as her father thinking he’s from another planet. The dialogue in the book is entertaining and the internal dialogue shows what she’s really thinking and how things appear to her, which is not always the way that most people would think since she was brought up in unusual ways.

This book was very well written because it keeps the audience engaged from the beginning. She also writes in short chapters of an instance that greatly affected her, conveying an important lesson without a lengthy story.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
