Selling With Presence by Reggie Pearse is for sales professionals who want to distinguish themselves by their presence. However, anyone wishing to improve his or her presence in any line of work would profit from reading it.

The Introduction starts with a riveting example from the author’s experience observing a sales person's interaction with his daughter, giving pointed details (such as his daughter finds buying encounters stressful) that allow the reader to fully understand the situation. The author follows the example with the definition of “selling with presence”, what the book will cover and ends with the author’s qualifications to write on the topic.

The seven chapters all start out with what the author will do in that chapter. The first, second, third and fifth chapters follow with an example from the author’s life; chapter four follows with a tie-back to the Introduction then an example; chapter six starts with background on the sales industry and chapter seven the general business industry.

I will focus on two different chapters to give the reader a feel for the content.

Chapter 3 “Presentations” gives an extended analogy likening sales professionals to actors, detailing behaviors and skills needed and then several goals, each with an exercise to achieve the goal. One behavior is to convey confidence: the body, voice, face and emotions all must convey the sales professional's message “powerfully and persuasively”; the exercise to achieve this goal, from improvisation theater, is “Jump Emotions”.

Chapter 6 “Social Media” briefly discusses the sales industry background instead of an example to highlight the prominence social media occupies today. Pearse gives tips for LinkedIn, rules for Twitter and how to leverage your presence in Facebook. For a person like me not raised on social media, the chapter will help the reader launch into the social media world; those already on social media can enhance their presence.

I love the insights into human thinking the author shows. In Chapter 2 in the paragraph starting on page 21 and ending on page 22, the author states the tendency that people without great presence think about those with great presence and briefly how the tendency comes about and how to correct it.

The only dislike I had was very minor: the last chapter’s concluding paragraph starts with the sentence “I sincerely hope you are willing to work on your presence so you can close more deals.” All the words before “work” should be deleted because this book is concise, specific and allows the reader to immediately work on his or her sales presence.

Because the book is very well edited, I was not distracted by errors. Once in a great while there is a grammatical error, sometimes a style error but too infrequent to distract from the message.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Why? Each of the seven chapters contains examples—mostly from the author's many years in his own business—as well as resources to allow the reader to improve himself/herself.

I chose this book because I wanted to learn more about sales. It more than fulfilled my expectations.

I've never read a self-help book before, but this seems like it might be a good one to try out! Thanks for the review!
