Review by Twylla -- Eggstravagant Easter Eggs
Eggstravagant Easter Eggs: Over 200 Ideas for Artistic Looking Eggs by Maya Elston is a comprehensive guide that provides ideas, patterns, and techniques using a variety of materials for making artistic Easter eggs. Ms. Elston is an accomplished artist who has received many awards for her work. Her art has been exhibited in numerous venues in Europe.
The purpose of this book is to provide easy-to-follow designs and techniques for creating beautiful eggs. Over 200 designs are presented in the book. They are organized by themes. This is not a guide for making Easter eggs with your small children. These are hand-painted decorations that represent traditional designs from around the world. The designs are breathtaking. They remind me of the Christmas markets in Europe. A few of the designs require some artistic talent, but most can easily be created by most crafters. Ms. Elston encourages readers to create their own designs. She points out that sometimes mistakes turn out to be even better than the original intent.
The introduction includes a very interesting history of painting eggs for Easter from the Slavic traditions to the creation of the Fabergé eggs for the court of Imperial Russia in the nineteenth century.
I found the instructions and techniques to be easy to understand and easy to follow. I was expecting step-by-step instructions, but the writing style is more of a narrative. In Chapter 3, there is a very good explanation of how to drain an egg and use the outer shell. Chapter 12 is about making chicken, bird and fish figurines out of the eggs. It is my favorite chapter! These cute characters are easy to make and they look amazing.
I liked that these projects can be done very inexpensively. Ordinary materials that most people have on hand are utilized. For example, the cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels can be cut up into 15 egg holders and decorated along with the egg. Most crafters would have the items on hand required to make the eggs. She offers a lot of good alternative options for materials.
I loved the stunning photographs. Many people would enjoy this book just for the pictures.
I would recommend this book to crafters or people who appreciate art. The book was well-written and well-edited. I can’t think of anything about the book I didn’t like.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Ms. Elston skillfully presents easy-to-follow instructions so ordinary people can create these beautiful works of art. I found this book very inspiring.
