Eggstravagant Easter Eggs: Over 200 Ideas for Artistic Looking Eggs by Maya Elston is exactly about what the title says: making eggs extravagant by painting them. Literally. It’s a very quirky, very specific book, and the only reason I decided to read and review it is that the tradition is one I grew up with and am well familiar with.

Right off the bat, on the very first page, is the thing I liked the most about the book – a small introduction to the history of the tradition and the cultures it encompasses. It’s nothing I don’t already know, but I still find it an incredibly thoughtful gesture – taking time to give credit where it’s due rather than jumping into things right away.
Another thing I liked is the detailed photos that go with the instructions, as well as the instructions themselves. It’s never a “because I say so” or “because I’m the expert here” case. Whenever the author suggests using a certain material or type of paint, there’s always an explanation why. It makes up for a surprisingly educational read without even realizing it. Who knew tempera paint had longer longevity than acrylics?! Well, painters, maybe, but that’s not the point…

The book is made up of seventeen chapters, thirteen of which are all different methods for decorating eggs. Each chapter follows the same scheme. First, there’s a brief explanation of the method (i.e. what decoupage is). Then, there’s a suggestion for suitable materials for that particular method. Finally, there’s an explanation of the execution of said method, using up to twenty photos for reference. Twenty photos…Did I mention that’s another thing I liked? One chapter is about a page and a half, three pages at most, yet there are up to twenty photos in it. That’s one author who does not spare their SD card. Talk about dedication!

There’s one thing I disliked, however, and that is the repetitive sentence structure used throughout the book to express causation (for it is…, for they are…etc.). I honestly don’t think the author used “because” even once. It’s a small thing, I know, but it still nagged at my brain. It made reading the book slightly annoying.

I rate it 4 stars out of 4. I didn't notice any typos, spelling or grammar errors. There’s no profanity in it.

It’s not a book to read as a pastime or a book you can love or hate. It provides valuable, detailed information about a specific thing that you turn to when you need it. I recommend it for anyone interested in arts and crafts, and in egg decoration in particular. (Give it a shot, by the way. It’s fun, I promise you!)
