Review by Kurt Billingham -- Nadeems journey
Nadeem's Journey is a heartwrenching story written by Sherine Anniruth, a mother who retells her story of when her son was sadly taken away from her in 2015 by cancer. It contains 158 pages and 12 chapters that also include a conclusion, glossary, and credits.
Although his life was tragically cut short, Nadeem gave life everything he could. He showed signs of maturity and independence from an early age. He demonstrated that by taking care of his younger siblings and excelling at his studies, he also became the school cricket captain when he was in his third year of school.
I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this book. Nadeem went through so much in his short life, and the amount of courage he showed is no shorter then heroic. He developed an eye problem that affected his vision but continued with his love of sports. He developed psoriasis at an early age and dealt with the irritation without complaint, and he moved to Australia from South Africa and continued to be successful in school. It was only in 2015 when he became diagnosed with cancer that tested him. That began the frequent hospital visits and mental challenges that plagued his later life.
The reason why I loved reading Nadeem's Journey so much is that it gave me a look into a tough topic and see how it affects people. I never really considered the inner personal struggles someone would go through when they are facing such a cruel fate. I felt connected to Nadeem when reading because I saw his transformation from a healthy young man to a shadow of his former self through photos. The way the story is written it feels so real to how a mother would feel, I felt the pain Sherine was conveying through her words and wished for Nadeem to get better despite knowing the sad ending from the beginning, and my heart sank when he finally stopped breathing. The only faults I found in the story were sometimes several phrases repeated themselves, and the coherency dropped at times. Other then these few gripes, this book was excellently written and edited.
I am grateful that I read this book, it made me think in a way I have never done before, and it is a fantastic feeling when a book impacts you that much. I highly recommend everyone to experience this book, especially someone who is dealing with a life-threatening illness; it puts matters into perspective and allows people to understand such a horrible topic. I had an incredible time reading this, and that is why I am giving Nadeem's Journey 4 out of 4 stars.
