Maya Elston’s Eggstravagant Easter Eggs: Over 200 Ideas for Artistic Looking Eggs is a celebration of the many crafty ways in which one can decorate eggs. With 200 designs to admire throughout the short book, there is sure to be something to please everybody’s artistic taste. Elston's work contains numerous egg-decorating designs and techniques with simple instructions frequently accompanied by colorful images of the said designs. The book includes sections on the basics of choosing the right eggs, required materials, decorating techniques, and separate chapters detailing a wide array of decorating styles.

The writer provides such exact details for creating designs displayed in the book, in a way that makes it clear that egg-decorating is a deep passion of the author’s and highlights her expertise in this area. The author’s tone throughout the book is what I liked most about this read. She frequently states how she likes to do things and which brands she uses, but she does not pressure the reader to necessarily do the same. Instead, Elston encourages readers to experiment with their own materials and designs. The writer is also encouraging in her acknowledgment that mistakes do happen. However, she is quick to offer handy tips on how to cover up said mistakes. The book also includes other practical tips including warnings about the mess that often accompanies egg-decorating and the risk that eggs may carry Salmonella.

I enjoyed the occasional academic and historical facts included throughout the book, such as the explanation around the meaning of collage versus decoupage as different design techniques. Elston also includes ‘notes’ in some chapters to refer to other sections of the book. This makes it easier for the reader to know where the steps for certain techniques are located and helps to tie the various chapters of the book together.

There is very little that I can fault this book on, despite the fact that I am no artist. I noted only two minor spelling/grammatical errors in the book, which did not disrupt the flow of the writing. Overall, the book appeared to be well-thought-out and edited. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars in light of Elston’s exceptional written detail, pleasing images, and easy-to-follow instructions.

Although the author states that “most of these projects are not for children”, I would argue that highly creative older children may find this book helpful in constructing artistic ideas or finding inspiration for their next craft activity. Adults with a creative flair or an appreciation for art are also likely to enjoy this book. Although this book is an accessible read for most adults given the simple instructions, I would not recommend this book to individuals without an interest in craft or those with minimal patience.
