Eggstravagant Easter Eggs by Maya Elston is a book about the art of decorating Easter eggs. The book offers a short historical overview of this form of art, including its origins in Slavic paganism, and how it got associated with Christianity and Easter later. Following the historical overview, the author also mentions her own family tradition concerning Easter eggs in a brief manner. After this, the book turns into a manual, encouraging the reader to decorate his or her own Easter eggs.

The book is extremely detailed, it covers every possible question one may have concerning the decoration of Easter eggs, such as what materials and items to use (with recommendation of actual brands), and even safety instructions, such as that one should always wash his or her hands after dealing with eggs, as they might contain salmonella. The book covers the process of decorating an egg from the first step of emptying out a chicken egg to actual designs, from simplistic ones, such as polka-dot eggs to the most complicated ones, such as making replicas of the famous Fabergé Eggs. I liked that besides the instructions, the book was full of illustrations for better understanding, such as schematics and photos both during the process and of the finished products so that one may know what to expect from following the guides. It was also good to note that the book was edited well, in fact, I couldn’t find a single grammatical mistake or typo when I read through it.

There is one thing which I did not like about this book. I would have loved to read some more information about the famous Fabergé Eggs, which were briefly mentioned in the historical overview part. While some basic information was enumerated about them, I felt that compared to the rest of the topics of the historical overview, this part was not as detailed as the rest.

The book is suitable for anyone who is interested in the art of decorating Easter eggs or would like to try creating handcrafted pieces of art. Obviously, for someone who is not interested in any of these topics, the book would be boring and useless. I would also not recommend it for children, as most of the ideas for decorating Easter Eggs would be extremely hard for them to make, even the most simplistic ones.

To conclude, Eggstravagant Easter Eggs by Maya Elston is a great book, which provides an insight into the art of decorating Easter eggs, with an actual step-by-step guide. It serves this function well, it’s easy to understand, it provides fantastic, creative ideas, and it has been edited well. Therefore I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
