Each of us is aware of the reality that is death. When faced with the certainty that your life is about to end, how do you see yourself handling it? Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss by Susan Ducharme Hoben shares how she and Bruce, her husband, faced one of the greatest challenges in their lives. When the couple learned of Bruce’s terminal disease, the direction of their lives changed in a way that perhaps not most people would choose.

Susan and Bruce shared a deep understanding on the essence of living. Learning how much time one has left did not stop them from experiencing life to the fullest. Their journey is an inspiration that love, and happiness are not lost amidst the awareness of a coming end.

I found the couple’s fresh perspective in dealing with death as the best part of the book and which I liked most. Death is commonly associated with feelings of despair; however, their story is an encouragement that knowing when your life will end is an opportunity to be more highly aware that we are currently thriving, enabling us to actively choose how we want to live the rest of our lives. They showed us that we can leave this world with great peace and contentment.

There are some parts in the narration that give too much details which I disliked most. Detailed accounts were satisfactory to certain areas as it makes you feel you are in the same room as them, heightening the reading experience. However, there are certain areas wherein the generosity of details deems unnecessary as it comes off too cheesy or dramatic.

I rate Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss 4 out of 4 stars. It is a recommended read as it broadens our perspective on living and dying. It educates us to a certain degree on how we can prepare ourselves for the end. Despite the topic on death, it also releases warmth by learning that a relationship rich with love, respect, and understanding is still possible and abundant.

The audience I would recommend this book to are people going through a similar challenge, such as knowing someone with terminal disease or may be sick themselves. This could serve as motivation or encouragement in coping and may provide better outlook in life despite their difficulty. On the other hand, I would not recommend this book to people looking for a light read nor to people currently incapable in dealing with stressful situations as the topic may be grievous for them.
