Official Review: Find Your Amazing self by Patricia May
Find Your Amazing Self by Patricia May is a non-fiction guide for incorporating mediation and mindful practices into a daily routine. Useful for both children and adults, this method is designed with our busy schedules in mind, as it takes only five minutes to complete. There are five steps, and each step is just one minute long.
The book begins with a summary of the program and the purpose for each of the five steps. Each of the five steps are then laid out in their own sections using simple and understandable language. There are cute little images between each section of the book with inspirational sayings on them. I can easily imagine these images as posters on the wall in a classroom or therapy setting.
I've read a lot of books on meditation and mindfulness, and this is probably the simplest, most easy to read book of the genre that I've ever come across. This is partially due to the fact that it is designed for children to understand, but I also think that it's just well-written in general. It's a straightforward, direct guide of what to do, and that makes it so much more approachable as a method that would actually work. Being designed to fit into a busy schedule, taking up only five minutes of the day, is a big plus as well.
There was only one flaw that really stood out to me in the form of a sentence that began with the words, “Research has proven that...” While I fully believe that this research does exist, there is no further evidence or citation so that I could look up this research for myself. I understand that children who pick up this book won't care about or even understand the importance of providing sources, but as a parent, I want to know where this information is coming from. I'm not expecting full APA citations with a complete bibliography, but even a footnote or a short “Resources for Parents” section at the end of the book would have been enough to satisfy the skeptic in me.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and think it is a great resource. Especially in today's unexpectedly changing world, with more parents having to be home with their children throughout the entire day, I can see needing some kind of guide like this to incorporate peace and mindfulness into the daily routine. My one little issue with the research would probably entice me to give the book a rating of 3.5 out of 4 stars. However, half stars aren't an option here, so I will round up to 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to those who are interested in finding a simple meditation program to incorporate into their busy lives.
