[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Heat in the Vegas Night" by Jerry Reedy.]
The game of blackjack has never been this exciting, nerve-racking, and terrifying. When Jerry Reedy, aka Red, decides to head down to Lake Tahoe to learn professional gambling, nothing could have prepared him for the life-changing turn of events that followed.
After getting properly schooled on the game by Steve Kammeyer, aka the Boss, Red joins the "Kammeyer group" as they leave their mark across different casinos in Vegas. The Kammeyer brand of blackjack is nothing like the typical game of blackjack. The crew employs the use of a mirror to spy on dealers' hole cards. While this ensures that they win at almost every turn, getting caught with the mirror or “gaff” could spell doom for the crew. Nevertheless, it's only a matter of time before the jig is up.
Heat in the Vegas Night by Jerry Reedy is a non-fiction novel that reads like an action-packed and fast-paced crime thriller. Readers get a tantalizing glimpse of the 1980s casino scene in Las Vegas. The writing was clear and concise, which moved the story along quickly and seamlessly. The author did a good job of explaining the blackjack terminologies in the book, making it a bit easier for the reader to adequately follow the story. There was also a glossary of terms at the end of the book that helped to shed more light on the terminologies.
One of the book’s highpoints for me was the exciting intro and how it set the tone for the rest of the story. You can almost feel the crew’s nervous energy each time they feel the heat and have to make a run for the nearest exit. Moreso, after discovering that the Las Vegas authorities were unto them. I also like that while the story focused heavily on gambling, the author went on to portray the relationships and bonds that were formed between members of the crew. Although most of them started as distrustful strangers, the bonds they formed proved to be the key to the success of their operation.
Steve Kammeyer was an interesting, enigmatic, and incredibly ballsy character. He was not only the boss, but he was also the heart and soul of the group. The crew’s loyalty to him was without question, and he imbued them with a strong sense of confidence and self-worth. Steve’s apparent fearlessness could also be attributed to the fact that he loved to live dangerously. He was an intelligent man with a brilliant mind who could succeed at anything he set his mind to. Yet he chose to thrive as the mastermind behind a blackjack cheating crew in Las Vegas. As the story unfolded with its different twists and turns, it became clear that money wasn’t the primary draw for Steve.
The book appeared professionally edited, as I could only spot about five editing errors in total. Heat in the Vegas Night is an enthralling story. The fact that it is based on true events only further elevates its undeniable cinematic appeal. It’s a real-life adventure in high stakes living. I’m quite satisfied to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Heat in the Vegas Night would appeal to lovers of blackjack or any gambling-related action novel.
