Review by Khillard -- Nadeems journey by Sherine Anniruth
Nadeem's Journey: A Heart-wrenching Story of a Loving Mother Losing Her Son to Cancer by Sherine Anniruth is a very touching story of a young, healthy man, in the prime of his life with great accomplishments facing a cancer death sentence.
Nadeem's medical problems began as a child while he was playing Cricket. He could not see very well but that did not stop Nadeem from playing the sport. In one of his class pictures from school his mother noticed that his eyes did not seem right. After seeing an ophthalmologist and trying special contact lens, the only solution was a corneal implant. He was added to the implant list but it would be a few years before he got the implant. In his young adult years, Nadeem had other medical concerns such as psoriasis, a dry, itchy skin condition that causes severe pain from the itch. He was very active and ate healthy foods. He did not eat snacks or foods that would cause him to gain weight; however, he noticed that with all his exercise and healthy eating he was still gaining weight. Several physicians he saw did not take him seriously. Nadeem and his mother had an inkling that something more was going on. Nadeem's abdomen was bloated and this bloat caused pressure into his chest area. When this happened his mother took him to ER where several diagnostic tests were done and he was told it was ascites, which is fluid build up in the lining of the abdomen. He had several liters of fluid drained and eventually had a permanent drain put in so the fluid could be drained more easily from his body. With several more tests done he was was told his ascites was caused by cancer. Nadeem and his mother believed he would get better and he could beat this cancer. His mother was his biggest support system but other family members including his siblings and his aunts were by his side through this journey. In the end, Nadeem lived the best life he could. He was well loved by anyone who met him. His story is one that any mother would love to tell and the author does it very well through the documentation Nadeem asked her to do while he went through this.
What I liked about the book was how inspiring it was to me. The love and care this mother took with her first-born son was amazing. Her own struggles to see one of her children go through something that was out of her control were real and yet she kept her thoughts to herself and did not cry in front of him. This was awe inspiring to me. Her truthfulness regarding the words doctors had spoken to her son in the first days of his illness any other mother probably would not put to paper but she did and did it well. A few times in the book the heartbreak she felt the reader felt and could relate to especially if you have children and intuition that your child may not survive.
I do not think there is anything I disliked about the book. There are 158 pages to Nadeem's story consisting of 12 chapters. The author includes photos of Nadeem's journey that only makes this story even more real and touching.
I would recommend this book to others especially those who need inspiration during a battle with cancer to know they are not alone in this battle.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars . It is professionally written from a mother's point of view and reads smoothly throughout. Where one chapter ends the next chapter picks up.
