[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "A Book For Kids About Pandas" by Frances York.]
A Book for Kids About Pandas by Frances York, is a non-fiction book all about pandas. Throughout the book, important facts are given to the reader. Amazing photographs accompany the abundance of information.
The book starts out by explaining the name origin and the physical description of the panda bear. Vivid and captivating photographs help tell the amazing story of the Giant Panda. Frances York then goes on to describe the history and location of the panda bear. The author goes into detail about the panda's diet, specifically the bamboo plant, in which he describes it's life cycle. Here, children, especially boys, will enjoy learning all about panda poop.
Throughout the book, a vast variety of information is given. From all about reproduction and babies to what the panda does for fun. Towards the end of the book, the author touches on conservation efforts and panda diplomacy. Who knew that pandas were loaned to Japan and America to help foster cultural relations?
As an elementary school teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and give it 3 out of 4 stars. I feel this is a book a teacher could use in the classroom, especially to accompany a research paper. The reason it only received 3 stars, not 4, is for a couple of reasons. First, the order of the chapters did not make sense to me. It seemed as if the book was jumping from one topic to the next and back again. I would have liked to see a grade level equivalent on the front cover of the book. As a teacher, it would make my job easier if it said "grades three to five" right on the cover. I would have also liked to see an opening page that would capture the attention better. When writing for children, they need to be captivated right away, within the first couple sentences.
If you have children that love animals, or a teacher in the classroom, A Book for Kids About Pandas, by Frances York, is definitely worth checking out. For teachers, it is a great resource to blend with the Common Core Standards. For parents, it is a wonderful book with beautiful photographs that your child will pick up and read.
