Review by Lawrence Chitu Msopa -- Restore Trust
America was once a country of meritocracy and potential prosperity, its political leaders were able to take sound decisions to benefit all citizens equally. However, the country has now lost its glory due to its greedy and selfish political leaders. The Restore Trust by Werner NEFF has unearthed strong root causes of the country’s current crisis (i.e. economic downturn) and proposed incredible possible solutions.
The author has analysed three political topics that have taken over the headlines in America and have shaped economic decision making; employment, the budget deficit and taxes. The book has revealed that the gap that exists between rich and poor people emerges from the gap that has created between the Democratic Party (conservatives) and the Republic Party (liberals). The book is very clear and understandable, since the author has used several examples and references to justify his experiences and observations/findings.
The Republic Party with its libertarian policy has influenced unequal opportunities, unfair taxes, nonviolent crimes, corruption, imbalance of wealth, excluded retirement plans and health insurance, selfishness and greedy. The premature of disbursement of pension funds is one of the poverty traps that deeply touched me, which made Tommy Thomas to lose everything just by following the U.S. laws. Libertarian policy on its platform unfolds no any consideration for the struggling working people. This plainly shows that the libertarian policy seeks to protect the right of corruption and rich people, while strongly eroding the middle class and sweeping the poor under the rug.
Werner NEFF has put to light that democracy in U.S. has decayed and disoriented. Politicians don’t care of their promises, and they are moulded up by what is in it for me mentality. Extended employment benefits are blocked, poor minimum wage and infrastructure are at the forefront and laws are designed to meet political goals. All these malpractices have eroded democratic principles. It has also indicated in this book that election procedures in 47 states are not regulated democratically. This is being revealed by the existence of gerrymandering, restriction of some citizens to exercise their voting power and the creation of loopholes in the U.S. legislation, which only benefits millionaire politicians rather than its voters.
In the last part of this book, the author has emphasised to strongly hold and strengthen democratic policy which is responsible to fill all poverty traps in order to redeem the country’s glory. I really enjoyed reading this book which aims to build bridges during crisis (i.e. restoring trust) rather than digging dams. The book may sound provocative to some politicians yet - beaming them development and integrity. There are very few and minimal punctuation errors which are easily ignored. I am recommending this book to all Americans including politicians and economist. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
