If you are looking for a practical guide for essential leadership qualities to either sharpen your skills or enhance your management style, Leadership The Art of Inspiring People to Be Their Best by Craig B. Whelden is a high quality book. Retired Major General Craig B. Whelden explains what is required of those taking the lead and illustrates each using his own personal experiences while in the army and marines.

How would you feel if your boss asked you to tell him when he or she was overstepping their boundaries? This was what I liked most about Craig B. Whelden’s book. He specifically requested feedback from those under his supervision and wanted them to highlight his faults. How many times have you been asked to point out your boss’s flaws? There is nothing more attractive in a person than them asking for you to tell them when they are about to fall, breach an ethical boundary, or to help them be their best. That means they not only respect you enough, but they want to achieve a heightened self-actualization. Aside from the fact that he basically gives a printout of his strengths, weaknesses, and pet peeves, he is a leader who advocates humility and respects his underlings enough to give them a heads up, however, requires open communication so he himself can be his best self. This barely even skims the surface of what can easily be described as a thought-provoking read.

Additionally, I liked how the author set up many of his stories and the lesson to be learned. He creates anticipation in a very concise, thoughtful manner and then delivers with material mined from deep within the depths of not only his own, but also some other very wise souls.

What I disliked most about the book was that he did not expound on the MDMP process stages. Although his major point was understood, a side point was that it could be implemented "at home", therefore, a full explanation on each stage would have been helpful.

Overall, I rated the book 4 out of 4 stars. It was very well edited, created anticipation for the next lesson, and captured my attention (even though I am not particularly interested in the army or marines). The book not only had a multitude of useful information, but the author was able to pinpoint his target audience and teach and present in a humble manner representative of a true leader.
