[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Accidental Cowgirl" by Mary Lynn Archibald.]
Mary Lynn Archibald uses her wit, humor, and incredible storytelling skill to tell a delightful tale in her memoir, Accidental Cowgirl: Six Cows, No Horse and No Clue. Mary flawlessly weaves together journal entries, humorous anecdotes, and life lessons as she tells of her twelve years caring for Twin Creeks Ranch with her husband, Carl. It’s safe to say that Mary and Carl didn’t realize just what they were getting themselves into when they decided to take a leap of faith and purchase Twin Creeks Ranch. Mary tells of never-ending repairs and rookie mistakes as she and her husband learned what it really meant to run a ranch. But she also tells of sweet moments and wonderful victories as they fell in love with the ranch and their animals and plants thrived.
I enjoyed this book very much. Mary has a way of pulling you in and making you want to know what crazy thing happened next. Some of her stories are heartwarming, some hilarious, and others brought tears to my eyes. I found the simplicity and honesty of her story telling refreshing, as she writes equally about the failures and the successes that they experienced during their adventure of owning Twin Creeks Ranch.
The lovely descriptions made this book a joy to read. I loved reading about the many different plants and animals they encountered while living on the ranch, as well as the colorful, diverse group of people they called neighbors. It was fun to read the sections where she described the different personalities of their cows. And the stories about their dog, Snazzy, were some of the best, funniest bits.
I gladly give Accidental Cowgirl: Six Cows, No Horse and No Clue 4 out of 4 stars. I can’t think of anything I disliked about the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was easy to read dozens of pages without even realizing, and difficult to put it down. The book is well-written and appears to have been professionally edited, as I did not find any errors while reading.
I would recommend this book to most anybody. There are several instances of mild profanity, so this book may not be best for younger audiences. However, anyone who enjoys a good story, particularly about nature and animals, would enjoy reading this book. It’s adventure, action, humor, romance, and poetry all rolled into one. And if you’re considering taking up ownership of a ranch, I would definitely recommend sitting down with this book first!
