So, You’re Raising Your Grandkids! Tested Tips, Research and Real Life Stories to Make Your Life Easier is a self-help book written by Harriet Hodgson. Harriet Hodgson is an author of various health and wellness resources that provide individuals with guidance relating to life’s circumstances. This was a very enjoyable, heartfelt read since the content tied directly to Harriet’s life.

Harriet, a loving wife, a mother of one daughter, and grandmother of two grandchildren, suffered the horrific losses of her daughter, Helen, her father-in-law, former son-in-law, as well as her sole sibling within the same year. Due to these tragedies, Harriet and her husband, John, had a life-changing decision to make. Their twin grandchildren, aged fifteen, now had to grieve the loss of both of their parents. Being a teenager is an extremely difficult time to begin with, and I personally cannot imagine what these adolescents had to endure. Harriet and John made the valiant decision of becoming the primary caregivers for their grandchildren. Rather than simply having the responsibility of being grandparents, Harriet and John needed to switch gears to become grandparents raising their grandchildren. This resource includes Harriet’s unbelievable journey taking on this responsibility as well as helpful tips and links to specific resources that may help other grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Usually when I come across a resource book it does not spark my immediate attention but this one surprisingly did the opposite. I am currently studying to be an early childhood educator, and based on my experience in multiple classrooms it is becoming increasingly common for grandparents to raise their grandchildren due to various circumstances, as Harriet addresses throughout her book. Harriet states, “According to the 2010 U.S. government Census, 4.9 million grandchildren are being raised by their grandparents.” This is a relatively high amount. That being said, for me as an educator it is extremely critical that I am aware of this statistic as well as resources and tips that can benefit students and grandparents from these types of families.

I truly valued how Harriet included an endless list of tips and tricks for grandparents raising their grandchildren to utilize. It can be immensely challenging for grandparents raising their grandchildren to be aware of the many resources available for them to access. This positive aspect regarding this book amazed me since Harriet included names of specific resources in addition to links that are easily accessible.

Overall, I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. I highly recommend for others to read this since it provides readers with valuable information regarding grandparents raising their grandchildren. The tips that Harriet includes in this resource are connected to her own life and experiences she encountered raising her own grandchildren, which makes this read very personable. I believe that this book would appeal to grandparents currently raising their grandchildren as well as educators and other professionals to broaden their knowledge on this topic and become familiar with resources available for these individuals.
