“According to the 2010 US government Census, 4.9 million children are being raised by their grandparents. This number is undoubtedly higher now.” Harriet Hodgson begins her book with a surprisingly significant number. Her book So, You're Raising Your Grandkids! targets to help these grandparents. She shares the experience that she and her husband John raised their twin grandkids. This book is a combination of her personal stories and useful tips.

When I started to read this book, I was shocked by the tragedies the author had. For a short period of several months, the author lost four family members, including the grandchildren's parents. The loss will be such a grief for any people who suffered. Yet, I do not feel any bitterness from the author. The whole book shares stories and information just as the reader is sitting at the kitchen table, chatting with the author, and getting to know each other calmly. The author and husband made sacrifices financially and mentally to raise two grandchildren. But I did not sense any complaints. Instead, I feel they are content. The author’s warm and upbeat tone is the thing that attracted me to read through the book.

Moreover, I appreciate the author put the reader’s needs as a priority. She positioned this book as a guide for other grandparents. So, she kept her personal stories as minimal. I can tell she did lots of research and exerted great efforts on putting the information together for her peers. She also put a summary list at the end of each chapter. These tips are printed in bold and very well summarized. Toward the end of the book, the author listed other resources beyond this book.

All in all, this is an outstanding book that offers the information in a concise and inspiring way. Beyond grandparenting, the author emphasizes a lot on love. She believes love is the foundation that can overcome any hurdles. There is nothing I do not like about this book. This book was professionally edited and reading through is effortless. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

This book is mainly for grandparents who are parenting their grandchildren. I am a normal parent who has kids in the house. However, I resonate with the day to day challenges that the author laid out. So, this book can also be a reference for a typical parent who is on the journey of raising kids.
