[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "What Grandparents MUST Know...about grandkids issues" by BRuce Sherman.]
What Grandparents MUST Know! About grandkids issues is a book written by Bruce Sherman, addressing the challenges faced by grandparents, who are looking after their grandchildren. The book consolidates all the modern-day issues faced by children that grandparents need to identify and understand. The author, who is also a grandparent, was motivated to write this book based on his experiences.
Many of us have been fortunate to have grandparents in our lives while we were growing up. The love and affection showered by them are unmatchable. In today's world, many grandparents are involved in watching their grandchildren, either full time or part-time. Babysitting is a tedious and responsible role that needs extra dedication. Also, due to the generation gap, grandparents are facing several unusual problems that they did not encounter while bringing up their children. The book gives an introduction to all the difficulties that grandparents may have to confront. The author has added a list of articles that they can search on the internet to help them overcome these difficulties. Although most of the topics in the book are universal, there is additional information for grandparents of different religions like Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim. There is also a section for African American grandparents.
What I liked most about this book is that the author has successfully addressed all the major problems faced by children in current times. It also includes some relatively newer issues like terrorism and cyberbullying. The book encourages grandparents to be informed and equipped to handle these issues. It also advises them to be more adaptable and accommodating to get better connected with their children and grandchildren. The topics about grandparent's visitation and suicidal grandkids are particularly thought-provoking.
What I disliked most about the book is that it is merely a list of titles on the different issues that grandparents may have to handle while babysitting their grandchildren. The readers have to copy the titles and look them up on the internet to read these articles. This may be tiresome, especially to senior citizens who are not technology-friendly. Due to this reason, I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. I would have appreciated the book further if the author had summarized at least some of the articles. This would certainly add higher value to the book.
The book is well written and does not have any substantial errors. I recommend this book to adults, particularly to grandparents, as the title implies. The articles suggested in the book are very informative and can also benefit parents and teachers.
