Review by Kimber_Kimber_M -- Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyda...
The book, Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (Trad. Chinese Edition), written by the author Peter Liptak and others, is an educational book written for non-native speakers whose first language is Chinese, to conquer the English language by teaching them how to use and understand idioms so that they become masters of the language rather than become defeated by it.
The book entails a detail description at the beginning including the layout of the book, a brief introduction of idioms and its definition, the importance for non-native speakers to learning idioms and the three (3) steps used to assist the reader in learning and using idioms effectively.
I learned that an idiom is a phrase that contains two or more words that when combined has a different meaning. Idioms may seem a bit complex to non-native speakers and thus, they need to learn the meanings of the most commonly used idioms.
The layout of the book includes three hundred (300) frequently used idioms divided into twenty – five (25) thematic chapters. Each chapter introduces ten to fifteen (10 – 15) idioms. The meaning of each idiom is explained in both English and Chinese. Example sentences are included to help the reader understand and apply such idioms. To enable in-depth learning, this book included a story that uses the idioms introduced in each chapter.
The questions listed under each story are straight forward and assist in ensuring that the reader understands the story. Each new idiom as stated in no particular order but explained adequately such that no guesswork is required and listed for ease of access when reviewing the idioms. The Chinese translation of the phrase is provided for some idioms where one can be made available. It is important to note that all of the idioms are based on the American version of English and their culture.
Also, no words of profanity or erotic scenes were found in this book. Also, I found no spelling or grammatical errors as the book seems to be professionally edited.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars given that it is thorough and yet employs simple methods to teach non-native speakers how to use idioms in the English language effectively. The exercises and stories provided in each chapter keep the reader engaged and once they actively participate should be able to understand idioms and master their applications. I recommend this book to all non-native speakers who speak and write traditional Chinese and would like to learn English a little better, as well as persons who want recap idioms used in the American version of English concerning their culture.
