Review by Ingrid Maria -- The United States of Opioids
The United States of Opioids by Harry Nelson talks about the opioids abuse in the United States, how has it got to this point, and what we can do to help the people who need it. Nelson presents the opioids' history and, also the horrible experiences and struggles addicted persons or their families have to face every day. The author is a founder of Nelson Hardiman, a healthcare and life sciences law firm, which makes him ideal to write about this subject.
This is a non-fiction book. I haven't tried this genre before and I didn't know what to expect, but this book was far beyond my expectations. I thought I would get bored, but, surprisingly, it didn't happen. I enjoyed it. I have to say that I didn't know so much about opioids before reading this book, but the author explained very well all the scientific information, using graphics too. I was pleased to see that he structured his message well and explained all his points in detail so that it can be understood by everybody. He brought adequate arguments and solutions to the current problems America confronts. Something that I appreciated was that every chapter (it has ten chapters) ends with a key takeaway. I find it useful that at the end of the book is a list of websites, telephone numbers, and associations for addicted persons and their families.
I consider that the real stories of people fighting this war with drugs are the most impressive and important they make the biggest impact on people, revealing our empathy and humanity. The foreword is written by Lisa Marie Preslie, talking about her struggle with addiction. Her story is just the first of others shared in this book.
The United States of Opioids reveals the pain and problems Americans confront, as the author says himself "a nation in pain". The book's message is powerful, raising a flag to the importance of addiction treatments, and not only. It opens your eyes to the cruel reality, the fight that more than 8 million Americans are having with drugs.
The writing is clear and concise. It is well-edited. There is nothing that I disliked about the book. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to everybody beginning teenagers. The main purpose of the book is to show the disastrous situation in the United States and what we can do to give a helping hand. All of us must understand the effects and dangers of opioids and this book explains everything properly and accurately.
