Compelling American Conversations: Questions and Quotations for Intermediate American English Language Learners, by Toni, Aberson, Eric, H. Roth, and Hal, Bogotch is a really informative, interesting, stimulating and useful study-book for intermediate learners of American English. I enjoyed reading this language book, as it is more than a traditional language book, it is also American culture, it is a possibility for enjoying interesting topics in conversation, growing the students’ thinking and especially critical thinking ability, and much more.

The textbook aims to enhance the speaking ability of students at an intermediate level through conversations about relevant topics in people’s lives, real-life and everyday situations, and important knowledge in American life, topics like American television, holidays and cities, bargaining and money, having job interviews, managing stress, being stylish, making and keeping friends and being ourselves, making and breaking habits, and studying English.

Every chapter is developed around a certain conversation topic, and every topic has some quotations from famous people centered around that topic, or there are proverbs, sayings, and idioms related to the conversation topic. I think that is a good idea, as it makes the activities in class more interesting, as students have to paraphrase them and/or explain their meaning, while they enlarge people’s cultural and linguistic knowledge.

I found also helpful the monolingual dictionary word lists included in every topic. This contributes to help people enlarge their active vocabulary. Another important contribution is the list of questions related to the given topic, which is an excellent material used in a classroom between pairs of students, or in a language learning classroom. It can be good teaching and exercise material for language teachers as well to use them in a classroom environment.

Another thing that I found extremely useful is the recommended online ESL resources listed at the end of the book, which is an immensely useful help for teachers to find additional material in language teaching. It can also help immensely those students who like to learn by themselves to find additional possibilities to enhance their language knowledge and their fluency. In addition, the academic word list can help international students who would like to study at an American college, to learn the academic vocabulary, which will help them at admission exams, language tests, and in their academic years.

The book appeared to be professionally edited, I could not really find typos or grammatical mistakes, I rate this American English language book 4 out of 4 stars, for its content and edition. The book is very entertaining, readable, useful, relevant, and I recommend it to ESL and TEFL teachers and students of English, to anybody who is interested in teaching or learning English at intermediate level and above, because speaking the language is very important, and the book will give them good material and help in finding additional material, in a very enjoyable way.
