Voyage Over Troubled Waters by Kenn Johnson gives an in-depth look at some of the first settlers to come to the modern-day United States from Europe. American children learn the basics of this story in any history class covering American history, but this book gives a new spin on the well-known story. Johnson gives more insight into what daily life was like for the settlers, and he gives readers a more detailed view of who the people were. Overall, I would give this book 2 out of 4 stars. I would give this book 2 stars because it felt a bit too much like reading a textbook for me, and I wanted to have a more engaging reading experience. The book was edited well and was sound from a technical standpoint.

My favorite part of this book was that Johnson brought the settlers to life. I enjoyed learning about the reasons that people left Europe and what their first days in the modern United States were like. I also appreciated that he made a lot of connections between people. It was interesting to learn about the different relationships that grew between people throughout their journey to the United States and as they settled down.

Although the writing was sound from a technical perspective, I did not love the writing style. At times the book seemed to drag on, even though it was a short book. I also felt that the writing could be a bit dry. It did occasionally feel like I was back in high school reading a history textbook. Although I appreciated the amount of detail that Johnson covered, I felt that it could have been told in a more engaging way.

I appreciated that this book was set up in a logical manner. The book flowed nicely, and there was not any random time skipping or jumping around. I thought the content was easy to follow, and the writing style was simple. This is a book that could be easily understood by younger readers.

I would only recommend this book to people who are genuinely interested in learning a more detailed history of this period. If you want a summary, I would encourage you to look up some articles or videos instead. If you are more of a casual history learned like I am, you will probably not enjoy this book. Overall, I think that Johnson is a promising writer, and I appreciated that he took the time to write a book on a subject that tends to get glossed over. That being said, I wish that the writing style had been less dull and more engaging. I would still consider checking out his future works.

I think that in the author's aim to write a thorough and detailed account, his writing became dull. You're right in recommending the book to people who are genuinely interested in learning a more detailed history of that period. I believe this was an honest review, well done.
