Lewis Kempfer’s life is far from a fairy tale. Rather it is the harsh and unforgiving reality of a man who has been through it all.

It all starts with 4 year old Lewis. A sweet and thoughtful boy who falls victim to physical and psychological abuse which continues throughout his childhood in a shifting and unstable home environment. This harsh start at life becomes the foundation of an ever-increasing self-loathing and a lack of self-confidence that sticks with Lewis through adulthood. As Lewis grows up, he learns that he is gay. As a result, he is rejected by the church finding no comfort or sense of acceptance or belonging from that end either.
Upon reaching an independent age, Lewis starts pursuing happiness with singing and acting while simultaneously pursuing love. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite go as planned. Following a series of failures in his love life and a medical diagnosis, the story takes a darker turn hurling us into a more twisted universe of pain, sex, and drug addiction.
It takes a near-death experience and losing everything before Lewis unexpectedly experiences something that re-installs hope in him and drags him out of the dark pit he dug for himself.

The author’s compelling writing is kept light with a touch of humour and will have you rapidly turning pages, swirling you deeper and further into Lewis’ world. The brutal honesty of the narrative is captivating and allows you to really engage in the story, feeling the pain, anxiety, and fear as Lewis desperately searches for salvation. The novel is well-written and well edited with no noticable errors.

I particularly enjoyed the psychological aspect of this book; it is a tragic example of the consequences and severity of psychological trauma. Author Lewis Kempfer delivers an unfiltered narration of events, displaying both the good and the ugly. This honesty combined with the author’s inner voice, starting at 4-year old Lewis and developing throughout the novel to adult Lewis, allows for a deeper understanding of Lewis’ choices however wrong and extreme.
Lastly I must compliment the title of the book; simple, straight-forward, and intriguing. I picked this book solely based on the title and the content by all means lived up to my expectations. There was nothing that I disliked, thus my rating for this memoir is four out of four stars.

Don’t mind me I’m just having a bad life is a powerful story with elements of abuse, psychological trauma, drugs, sex, and religion. You will enjoy this book if you are of the LGBTQ community, however, I equally recommend it to any adult reader who is looking for a well-mixed cocktail of despair, hopelessness, perseverance, and hope.

Don’t mind me I’m just having a bad life is a surreal, tragic, and educative story that is sure to leave you speechless.
