Nadeem's Journey is an extremely emotional story. This memoir follows the life of Nadeem Rajah from childhood to his premature death. It highlights his battle with the illness that would ultimately claim his life at such a tender age. Nadeem was only 25 years old. Just as his life is beginning, tragedy strikes. Sherine Anniruth writes this narrative showcasing the unconditional love she had for her son Nadeem. It further highlights the pain mother and child felt because the other was hurting. For Sherine, her pain was witnessing the physical and emotional pain brought about by the cancer her son was battling with. For Nadeem, it was the mental pain he saw his mother going through as she watched him struggle. They both fought to remain strong for each other.

This was a difficult read for me. I teared up throughout the book. I put the book down a couple of times and didn't think I would have the heart to finish reading it. The author made it clear from the onset that this was not going to be a miraculous happy ending. However, I did not expect the emotional reaction I experienced. The photos attached to the book at different intervals didn't help either, they just made my reading experience more painful. I felt like I personally knew this family. This was my loss too.

What I liked most about the book is the way it provides priceless insight into the lives of people fighting cancer and their support structures. Their everyday struggles, the physical pain, the mental and emotional drain should not be taken for granted. Life should not be taken for granted, it ought to be cherished. Everything can change forever in the blink of an eye.

The love and support of family, friends and the community dampened my sorrows and uplifted my spirits. Everyone came together and played their part. Nadeem ran a good race and although in undescribable pain, he stayed gracious. He touched the hearts of many simply by staying true to himself.

What I disliked most about the book is that I personally don't feel hopeful about global medical staff when I read it. The insensitivity of some of the doctors just made me so angry. I failed to be uplifted. This is in no way a reflection on the author, but rather a reflection on medical staff who are in the profession to make a living without it necessarily being a calling. I believe even if there is a hopeless situation, there is always a better way to break the news. I watched my grandma almost instantaneously get sick after her doctor told her she was dying. However, this is not a conclusion that ALL medical professionals are insensitive.

The book was in my opinion professionally edited. I might have come across one typo. There was nothing distracting (error wise) in the entire text. I love the addition of the glossary at the end of the book as I can always refer back on the more technical medical terms. This book deserves four out of four stars . Any rating beneath a four would be a failure on my part to identify exceptional work.

In writing this book, Sherine indicated that her hope was to raise awareness of the cancer her son contracted and also provide that extra little nudge for people to get medical checks should they feel something is wrong. I've decided to get the back pain I have been experiencing checked out. Objective accomplished. Thank you Sherine.
