Review by shinypuppies -- Dying Well
There’s no easy way to digest being told that a loved one is diagnosed with cancer or that they only have a short time left to live. Most people would want to try every possible way to survive a little longer, even if only by a couple of weeks. However, when Susan and her husband Bruce find out his life would be shortened, they decide to stop treatment and embrace the little time they had left together.
A bittersweet story of love, courage, and life, Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss is an inspirational memoir by Susan Ducharme Hoben that teaches us to appreciate life and “die well”. Susan and Bruce are forced to face challenging decisions and emotional roller coasters. After Susan survives both cancer and a tumor, she and Bruce celebrate life by throwing a party for all their friends and family. Unfortunately, Susan’s medical conditions weren’t going to be their biggest problem. A few years later, Bruce gets diagnosed with esophageal cancer and goes through rough treatment, hoping it would kill the cancer cells. However, when his cancer comes back even worse than before, the loving couple decides to let Bruce enjoy his last moments of life at home rather than in a hospital.
This story was highly enjoyable because it was incredibly touching and easy to follow. Susan Ducharme Hoben does a fine job painting the picture of her journey with Bruce. I could feel their emotions and see the setting through descriptive imagery. I was engaged in the story and soaking in every word as I read it. What I liked most about this book was the way death was portrayed. Death is a frightening concept, but this memoir made me see it as a way to appreciate every second of life by having fun and spending more time with loved ones.
I did not dislike any part of the book. The editing was flawless, and the story was emotionally beautiful. I would recommend this book to those who have lost a loved one, are battling with an illness, or just anyone who appreciates an inspirational story of love, loss, life, and death. There was hardly any profanity, allowing this book to be appropriate for those of all ages but more appealing to older children, teens, and adults.
Dying Well deserves a rating no less than 4 out of 4 stars because of its heartfelt expressions, range of emotions, and descriptions of courage and love. Those who read Susan Ducharme Hoben’s memoir will remember how we should make the most out of life and live fully without regrets so that we can all “die well”.
