An idiom is an expression that is specific to a particular language but whose meaning is separate from the meaning of its individual words. We all agree that because of this, the idioms can be a challenge to the non- native English speakers. Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (French Version) comes in to solve this problem especially for the French who’d want to learn English.

The book has been written by Peter N. Liptak and co-authored by Matthew Douma and Jay Douma. They are ESL educators that have a vast experience of teaching English across the world. After they have helped a great number of students learn this language, they have done projects and authored books to help international students learn English Language. It was translated by Marie-Odille Kippen who is a French citizen living in the United States.

Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (French Version) is a non-fiction book that gives slightly over 300 idioms that are commonly used by the North Americans. The book is subdivided into 25 topical chapters. Each topic has about 12 to 15 idioms. Each topic has 3 part learning process that makes reading it simple and interesting. That is; Example sentences cited in French and they are followed by their English translations. This is followed by the definition of the idioms used and there after fill- in -blank sections, short story and discussion questions. All these will make you quickly learn, memorize and retain the idioms given.

A wide range of idioms have been covered. They are commonly used in the school environment, at home, during travel, at the workplace, during shopping, when talking about weather conditions among others. Supplemental notes have been given to some of the terms and idioms to show the context in which they are to be used. The short stories are given in both English and French. After every 5 chapters, there is a crossword puzzle and the answers are given at the end of the book. An index is provided at the end of the book for easy usage. To make it even better, this book is only 160 pages long!

I recommend this book for any non-native speaker that would like to build his /her English language skills. It is also suitable for all learners at all levels. This book can be used as a study guide or even as a reference book. The book can also be used to learn French if one knows the basics. I loved the fact that the font size and color of this book varies and this makes the learner’s attention not to be diverted easily. In addition, the book was superbly edited and thus I give it 4 out of 4 stars rating.
