First Born “Daddyman” was authored by Frank Bailey. The book comprises ten chapters and is 100 pages long. It is in the genre of nonfiction. This is a personal account of triumph. The victory over drugs and crime was not won in a day but through a series of battles that the author masterfully narrates while taking the reader through fifty-two years of his life.

The author was the firstborn in his family. He recalls they were constantly on the move when he was young, and as a result, he had to attend different schools as well. One thing is clear, though. He was dearly loved by his mother and other family members. His father was mainly absent in his social life and thus grew up around his devoted mother and three charming sisters. They taught him many remarkable things, including specific traits they did not like in a man. It was during his teenage years that the fierce pangs of peer pressure and recreational drugs began to hit him. His mother protected him from the notorious gangs in his neighborhood although he ended up selling drugs. There was so much that was about to unveil before him, especially with his decision to join the Marine Corps.

This is a story of a man who thought he had everything perfectly planned in life and ended up at the doorstep of death and destruction. It was at this point that he eventually entrusted everything to God and witnessed a big turnaround in his life. However, this transformation did not just happen overnight. It took all the previous experiences of the author and many people who helped him to embrace a higher calling. He also had to adhere to the discipline of communing with God through prayer and Bible study. Consequently, one realizes there are many ways that God may use to reach people.

What I liked most in the book is that the author was open to reveal his personal flaws and the low moments of his life. He was also able to acknowledge all the people that assisted him in his journey of transformation. They never left his side, and thus I appreciate that he included them in his story. This reiterated the reality that transformation best takes place when one is surrounded by loving and patient people. The fact that the author states his plans were shattered but God ushered him into a new phase was also mesmerizing. However, I disliked the fact that many details were left out. I was naturally left with an irresistible urge to know more. Therefore, it was a relief when the author stated there might be more books coming up describing every chapter comprehensively. I look forward to reading them.

The book was easy to read and memorable as well. Editing was fairly done as I discovered a few errors. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars owing to the errors and incomprehensiveness. The book contains neither profane words nor explicit scenes, and hence I recommend it to all ardent fans of memoirs. It is suitable for mainly Christian believers and anyone who is open-minded as it is a fascinating story of God’s profound transformation.

This book proves that firstborns ain't perfect. As a teenager, Frank is exposed to drugs but he is able to get back to the right track thanks to the help of many people that are loving and patient with him.
