Review by Misty20058 -- Dying Well by Susan Ducharme Hoben
In Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss written by Susan Ducharme Hoben, we are taken on a rollercoaster of emotions. At the beginning of the memoir, we are introduced to Susan, as she finishes surviving both cancer and a tumor in her heart. After surviving these devastating circumstances, Susan throws a party to celebrate, a party that they fittingly name the ‘Celebration of life’ party. Sadly, not long after we witness this party, her husband gets diagnosed with a destructive form of oesophageal cancer. Once both Susan and Bruce finally think they are finished with cancer, something happens that they never expected. How will they deal with this?
Throughout the memoir, not only do Susan and Bruce embrace the hard cards that fate has dealt them, but they even manage to find silver linings in these tough times. It truly reminds the reader of how short life is, and that we might as well make the most of what we do have. When reading this book, it reminded me of a quote posted by lovequotemessages; “Remember that there will be no silver linings if there are no clouds. You have to always look at the brighter side even if you think there is none.”
Due to this, I think this book would have to be the most positive book approaching the topic of death that I have ever read. Not only is it a great read for anyone looking to read an amazing memoir, but I would highly recommend it to anyone dealing with tough times. I would recommend it to anyone over 13 as I believe they will be mature enough to understand it. Dying well truly demonstrates how there is still a blue sky even when all you can see at the time are clouds.
Not only does the book have a very important message, but it also was written extremely well. Susan’s writing style made the memoir extremely easy to read, making this book able to be read by anyone no matter their reading capabilities. Alongside this, Susan also added flashbacks throughout, this truly gave the reader the whole picture instead of only mentioning what was occurring at the time.
I would have to rate Dying well: Our Journey of Love and Loss four out of four stars. Not only because of the flawless storytelling but also because it was impeccably edited. Not once did I find an error.
