The Necessity of Finance by Dr. Anthony M. Criniti IV is a simplified guide in explaining what the study of finance is and isn’t along with its purpose in the real world. Criniti starts things off by providing a definition to finance which is “the science of the management of wealth for an individual, a group, or an organization.” Afterwards, he proceeds to explain why the study of finance is important along with what makes it different from the study of economics.

When it comes to economics and finance, the terms are often used interchangeably which is one of the causes linked to the confusion associated with defining what they mean. Not many know, nor understand, what makes them different from one another when they do similar things. While both study the impacts of wealth, each focuses on a specific aspect of wealth in terms of whom it affects.

As noted prior, finance focuses on the individual, group or organization. Economics, on the other hand, focuses on regions or nations. In other words, finance is looking into the part (the individuals) of the whole (region or nation) to see what does and doesn’t work in terms of generating continuous wealth.

Criniti keeps the explanations simple and to the point. In addition to the explanations, the author provides working examples from past and present to drive home the provided points. As complex as this may sound, the terminology used is easy to understand and grasp.

The energy that the author brings to the table is continuous and doesn’t let up. I especially liked how he mentions one of my pet peeves when it comes to informational books with “one thousand plus pages of content but no clear definition” of what you’re looking for. Another highlight from the book is how he explains the essence of wealth and what it means to different people.

The Necessity of Finance by Dr. Anthony M. Criniti IV gets a 4 out of 4 because it takes a complex subject and presents it in a manner that the everyday reader can comprehend. Despite being a wealth of knowledge and flawlessly edited, Criniti’s book isn’t for everyone. It is not recommended for those who view the study of finance, as defined by the author, as something unnecessary.

However, it is highly recommended for those looking to learn something new about the world of finance that goes beyond the realm of bookkeeping. It’s a wonderful read that shows both finance and economics is a new light.
