Official Review: The DASH Diet Cookbook by John Chathan

Post by nervangelic »

I, like most people, am wary when I see the word "diet" in a cookbook title. It brings to mind myriads of fad diets. I was pleasantly surprised when I began to read this book. The DASH diet is not a fad diet based on pseudo science. It is the culmination of nine years of research done by five different highly regarded medical research facilities. The result, was the basis for the update USDA food pyramid. DASH is not about just weight loss. It is focused on lowering blood pressure, maintaining the blood sugar of type 2 diabetics and preventing metabolic syndrome or "pre-diabetes". A focus on lower sodium intake, lean proteins and increased intake of fruits and vegetables, DASH offers many choices for even the most picky eater. They also include a basic exercise program that almost anyone can do. I have to say I am looking forward to trying many of the recipes included in this cookbook. My husband is especially excited to try the French dip. This book is a great starting point for anyone interested in eating healthier and reducing their risk for heart disease.
