Review by Agnes Masobeng -- Last Words from Above
Last Words from Above: Medicine for the Spirit by Jeremy Brown is comprised of one thousand nine hundred and ninety-two (1992) quotations. This one hundred and seventy-six (176) paged non-fiction got me glued from the first page. As I continued reading, the very first quotation was enough to encourage me to reflect on my spiritual life. Most of the things resonated with me from within in ways that I could not comprehend.
When I realised that the book is a spiritual/religious tale, I assumed the author would be preachy and making scriptural references at every turn. But, it was nothing like that. Where the author made scriptural citations, it was for a good course. I actually loved those instances. Most of the quotations were not scripturally referenced, nonetheless, if you're a Bible reader you'll notice that they had everything to do with the word of God!
The introduction was extremely powerful. It gave me a layout, a briefing and a highlight of what to expect as well as how the book came about. I was overwhelmed and couldn't wait to read the entire book. But, unfortunately, while I was reading, I felt like the introduction exaggerated some of the things. For example, Jeremy mentioned, "I was commanded to make the book 7 chapters long, and I was promised that I would be given 7 books, and this just so happens to be book number 7." Anticipation! I anticipated 7 chapters whereas there was actually no chapters in Last Words from Above. The book was composed of 1992 quotations without sections, parts and definitely without chapters.
There were numerous quotations which I liked in this book. The quotations included quote number 57, 226, 227, 234, 763, 69, 879, 115, 125, 180 and 199. I especially liked quotation number 226 which states,
"Complaining is not a talent but an indication of giving up."
And quotation 234, "Once you really start believing that God is always with you, there are certain places you won't take Him and certain conversations you won't have in front of Him."
In as much as I enjoyed reading this book without a show of pause, there were a few inconsistencies. The errors include typographical and grammatical mistakes. However, I was glad that they were minor mistakes which did not alter my flow in any manner.
As I have mentioned earlier, the author was not preachy or forcing to instil his religious beliefs on the reader. As a result, this book of powerful inspirational quotations can be read by anyone regardless of their age and their religious beliefs. And there was no profanity and sexual scenes of any kind. I am glad to rate Last Word from Above a perfect 4 out of 4 stars.
