How to Generate and Earn Royalty Income by Marina Peters is a non-fiction book about the financial benefits and process of getting royalties. The book contains legal terms, broad concepts and very specific details about different avenues from which a reader could receive royalties. The author provides definitions of the terms and concepts used throughout the book for those who may be unfamiliar with the process. Royalties can be earned from several sources, including writing, acting, creating art, building technology innovation, and owning property where minerals, oil or gas can be extracted. Some royalties are paid in a one-time payment, whereas other royalties provide ongoing payments over the course of several years.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I liked most how the book was organized, with the definition of royalty income first. Readers were given technical descriptions and examples to provide a clear picture of the author’s subject matter. I also found the misconceptions about royalties detailed at the end of the book very useful, as they addressed some questions that I had about receiving royalties.

The author addresses earning royalties on digital content, which is a rather new source of income. The book has current information that would help a reader get started earning royalties for their digital content, including photos, web applications and videos. There is a very useful section about stock websites where you can submit your digital photos for royalties.

I disliked most the information presented about how royalties are calculated in the music industry. There was a lot of detailed information presented quickly, and I would have enjoyed more examples with dollar amounts to get a better overall understanding of how producers, managers and aggregators are paid.

The book does contain a disclaimer, noting that the author’s information is based on her experiences. She does not guarantee the same results and experiences for everyone. Laws differ from state to state and country to country, so readers should be aware of laws that apply to them. This is not a book about getting rich quick. The author presented some challenges with generating royalty income and painted a realistic picture of the processes involved, many involving the creator’s time, effort and money to get started.

This non-fiction how-to book is a good way to learn about the process of receiving royalties. Becoming familiar with the legal terms and different types of royalties available is helpful to those seeking to increase their income by selling their assets or properties, especially those who are just beginning the process.
