Review: H- Christiane F

Post by arnaleigh »

H is an autobiogprahy of a young girl whose life slowly being to spin out of control and she becomes a heroin addict in her early teen years.

Set in Germany Christiane grow up on the wrong side of town, surrounded by the wrong sort of people. She was quick to rebel against her parents and began to drink and take "gateway" drugs.
When she got a little older she got addicted to heroin and was forced to work the streets in order to keep purchasing it.

While the details of this book may seem a little gruesome, the way in which Christiane tells her story makes the book unable to be put down. The life of this young girl is captivating and it is amazing to see how quickly this innocent girl ended up homeless and addicted to heroin. This book forces you to open your eyes to how drug addicts became to be that way and why they struggle to get help.

This book was published in Germany as "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" absolutely ages ago and is a total CLASSIC. A movie was made, also very well received.

Although I've never seen the movie nor read the book, I am associating this work with music - perhaps the soundtrack?
Spent time in Germany during the mid-1990's... perhaps its somewhere embedded in the Windmills of My Mind from way back then?

That would make sense the book was published in the 80's as far as I know so it would make sense for the movie to be about the time you were there!

I've read this ages ago and it is one of the few books that stuck in my mind since youth. Pretty tough story to read, IIRC, with all the drug use.
