Review by ExiledKami -- Heat in the Vegas Night
The life of a simple Oregon boy, Red, takes an unexpected turn when he receives a phone call from his friend, Spanky, who presents an offer for him to play professional blackjack. Fresh out of college and recently unemployed from his logging work, Red shows no hesitation in embracing this promising opportunity. There begins his journey with the Kammeyer group, a well-seasoned group of blackjack players selected for their athletic experience, under the guidance of the Boss, Steve Kammeyer. Heat in the Vegas Night is inspired by the adrenaline rush experiences of the author, Jerry Reedy, and his crew as they make the headlines in the ultimate city of dreams - Las Vegas - for cheating at blackjack. Will the watchful authorities succeed in their contest to catch them in the act when the audacious Kammeyer boys are always one step ahead to outwit and outrun the heat?
The author impressively demonstrates the creativity and intelligence of Steve Kammeyer and his system of cheating at blackjack. The boys are designated special roles and act systematically to save the 'brain' who uses a mirror to see the dealer's hole card, granting them an advantage of winning. The author dives into the reality of blackjack scams in the 1980's as the Boss and his shenanigan crew aim to exploit the casinos in Las Vegas. The fact that the events in this book are based on the true experiences of Reedy makes it more fascinating and intriguing to read.
One aspect that I liked the most was the author's inclusion of a glossary of the terminologies related to blackjack, in addition to some detailed explanations in the book. I was quite concerned if my limited knowledge in blackjack would derail my reading progress, thus I was pleased with the provision of such informative content.
Jerry Reedy did exceptional justice to his character's development and their critical roles in the story. The Kammeyer group sustains on the gradual but growing relationship among the boys and their unwavering dedication to save each other from the federal cuffs. The story told from Red's perspective allowed me to really experience what these relationships meant to him and how it impacted his maturity from an inexperienced runner to becoming a seasoned blackjack player, outsmarting the vigilant authorities. Fleeing with the dealer's money, unfortunate encounters with the opposition and the narrow escapes prove that Red and the boys survive on adrenaline in their efforts to evade the heat.
The story meanders into a ton of breathtaking events and I couldn't help but engage my imagination to predict what may happen next. The frenzied encounters of the boys caused me to wonder each time if they are finally busted, if the Kammeyer group kicked the bucket at last. Reedy knows how to draw in his audience with the fast-paced and action-packed plot and I couldn't stop turning the pages. The plot twists towards the conclusion were certainly not expected.
I must admit that this book took me through an entertaining journey that was both heart-warming and heart-racing. I disliked nothing about this book. It was professionally edited, with only one spotted spelling error that did not obstruct my reading experience. For these reasons, I give Heat in the Vegas Night a well-deserved 4 out of 4 stars. There were several instances of profanities, therefore, I recommend this book to a more mature audience. This book will definitely appeal to blackjack enthusiasts and fellow action novel fans.
