The Truth About Being Single, by Lakeshia Rivers Ekeigwe and Neva Lockhart, is a book that tells single women everywhere the truth that no one else will admit: it's normal and acceptable to want to not be single. Through observations and surveys, as well as experience, the authors provide "the truth about being single": we are biologically programmed to want to find a partner, and even if we claim to not want marriage, we can still picture a "perfect man"; an action which implies that if said man came along, marriage would be back on the table. The authors also insist that no matter how strong this desire is, conscious or not, no one should ever settle.

While I did not feel empowered by this book, nor did I feel I received much truly new information, it was very affirming to read about other single women who feel the same way I do about being single; society thinks being single is bad, and while singleness is truly not bad, that doesn't mean that single women want to remain single. Essentially, the book's main point could be proclaimed in a single sentence: it's okay to want to not be single, as long as one does not settle in order to rid themselves of singleness. However, no one would buy that point without the arguments and information included in the book.

I originally thought that this book would be more focused on how being single affects one's life, and vice-versa. Even though this was not at all the case, I found that I was neither disappointed by book, nor pleasantly surprised by its actual contents. The book was not exactly what I had expected, but it was still fairly interesting and a pretty good read.

This book includes some surveys, which I found very interesting to read, and the inclusion of these surveys allowed me to gain some better insight into what the authors are saying. The book also has some worksheets for readers to do on their own. While I typically do not like worksheets in books, these worked well to further the authors' point that even though it's normal to want to not be single, settling for being in a relationship just for the sake of not being single is not worth it.

The Truth About Being Single is a decent read - for single women. I do not think I would recommend this book to anyone who is not single, but for those who are, I think the main point is a powerful and meaningful one. That is why I gave this book 2 out of 4 stars.

I think that the idea of wanting to not be single is definitely applicable to men, too! The book is definitely geared toward women, but the concept is something everyone can benefit from.
