Rippped Off! by Gilbert Simon, M.D., is an exposé on the healthcare system of the United States of America. America has been globally represented as having one of the most coveted healthcare systems in the world. There have been many breakthroughs in healthcare, and everyone in the country now lives a much better life, right? Gilbert Simon has revealed in this book that this representation is largely false.

The author began by revealing the history of America’s healthcare system. He skillfully traced, from the postwar era, how both citizens and the government began spending outrageous amounts for low-quality healthcare. He then went on to current practices, by both hospitals and pharmaceutical companies, that have led to prices being hiked more than necessary. The role that fraud has played in all of this was not exempted. He broke down that area and even called out people that have fraudulently escaped with taxpayers’ money. The conclusion arrived at what every individual, including civilians, government officials, hospital administrators, and pharmaceutical companies can do to elevate America’s healthcare system to be truly accessible, high-quality, and affordable for all its residents.

It took the author fifty-one years to complete this book, and it shows. He broke down every detail so expertly that I was marveled at many things that I had no idea about. What made this book even more genuine is that the author was not merely going on a rant or a witch-hunt; he came, able-bodied, with facts. He came with numbers too, and numbers never lie! You’d be surprised at how much America has lost to low-quality healthcare. More than this, the writer also included insider tips that can help medium to low-income earners save tremendously on healthcare.

Another thing I loved was that this book is addressed to everyone. The government, companies, and individuals all have their own part to play in making America’s healthcare system outstanding as it should be. After exposing the problems, the author offered reasonable and doable solutions; this gave the book direction and focus. I was not supposed to laugh because this is a serious topic, but somehow, the author still managed to make me laugh. He used rhetoric and relatable anecdotes that lightened the mood.

Do not be mistaken that this book is a medical textbook of sorts. It is not. It can be read by everyone that has developed some reasoning. Even teenagers can make out almost everything written in it. At some points, the numbers and insurance talk made my head swirl, but it was necessary. The author also included memes that spiced up the whole thing. I could not find even one thing to dislike about this book, so my rating is deservedly 4 out of 4 stars.

The editing was impeccable, with no single error or profanity to be found. I would recommend Rippped Off! to American residents alone, but I believe everyone in the world should read this book. Government officials from other countries definitely have a thing or two to learn from this one. This book is sure to enrage people who have been benefiting from America’s current healthcare system, but that is the aim. The author’s message was clear from the start: make healthcare affordable and high-quality for all!

Your review reminds me of the saying, "It's not all gold that glitters". The book really sounds intriguing, I'm not an American citizen but even my country has poor health care systems. One can learn a thing or two from the book. Thanks for the review!

Your review is outstanding! I agree with you health care should be number one priority in every country not only America, I think the author did a great job writing a book about healthcare and its fallacy than what we think it is just pure facts.

Thanks for a good review, I wonder if the author took to long to write the book. I guess you'd have to trade off some of what would have been relevant some years ago and that means cutting away some of your anachronous notes. A holistic view is desirable for making a strong case though.

“You’d be surprised at how much America has lost to low-quality healthcare.” This really does make sense. I would be interested in reading how the author quantifies it. Making healthcare affordable and high-quality for all is so important.

I'm amazed at how much corruption is being exposed on a daily basis in recent times. This book adds to the growing list of exposés. Personally, I am not surprised by the fact that the healthcare system has been "ripping off" average citizens, but I am glad that more and more people are becoming aware of the problems. I also like that the author included funny memes to lighten the mood while presenting such a serious topic.

Thank you for a great review!

This is a rant, but I understand the author's frustration with the American healthcare system. It's not just the poor that bear the burden of a failed healthcare system, everyone does! Imagine being rich, but you have a chronic condition whose treatment is expensive, not to mention you aren't as productive as you used to be because of the illness. It's only a matter of time before you feel the pinch.
