As an ESL teacher I always struggle to find ways to teach phrasal verbs and idioms. This book is very handy and contains a simple way to ensure these idioms make sense to Japanese learners. I really liked it and would recommend it to other teachers. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

The groups of idioms are divided thematically (for example, shopping idioms, school idioms) and each one has a definition and a translation. It then gives an example of how it can be used in a sentence which also has a Japanese translation. To make sure the student actually comprehends the material and doesn’t just use the book as a reference guide it also includes worksheets. There are gap-fill exercises at the end of each chapter for the students to pick the right phrase for the sentence. There is also a story at the end of each chapter containing all the new phrases and this is followed by comprehension questions for students studying alone and also discussion questions if the student is part of a class.

The book is divided into 25 individual chapters and then into five overall sections, at the end of each section (the length of 5 chapters) there is a fun crossword to help students revise what they have learnt in the previous section. There are also plenty of Japanese translations for everything from the explanations, definitions to the stories. The book also contains some illustrations which can augment the student’s learning and comprehension. The index is also very useful as it contains every single idiom in the book so that students can use the book like a dictionary and look up words themselves.

The preface says that the book could potentially be used by high beginners but I disagree and think it is more suitable for high intermediates and upwards. The English used in the book is American English so this would not be useful for learners using a British English curriculum. The book is also very specific for Japanese learners so would not be suitable for leaners from other countries.

This book is a useful tool for teachers as you can use the material such as the discussion questions and worksheets in the classroom or set tasks for homework. However if a student did not have a teacher and wanted to do self-study then this would also be suitable for this purpose as the answers to the quizzes are in the book which is not always the case with many language textbooks. I often find giving relevant examples and good explanations of idioms difficult on the spot so as a teacher I think this will become a classroom staple.
