Official Review: PandXiety by Nasir Salaam
The COVID-19 pandemic hasn't been easy for most across the globe. Some have lost their jobs and homes. Others fear the disease itself. These factors, and many others, have likely resulted in an increase in stress and anxiety. But what is anxiety? What can you do to combat it?
PandXiety by Nasir Salaam is a pamphlet made to answer these questions. The author specifically wrote this pamphlet with the purpose of helping those who have anxiety or may have developed it in the current pandemic. In this short pamphlet, the author talks about causes of anxiety, things that may influence your anxiety, like phobias, and techniques to help combat it.
The PDF copy of this pamphlet I received was only seven pages long, which is amazing considering how much information there is regarding anxiety. I don't think the formatting was quite finished, so I believe the final copy may be a bit longer. Either way, this length may be perfect for some people. It covers some important information in a quick, easy format.
I also liked the information the author covered. He got through quite a bit of information in such a small space. That said, it may help people suffering from anxiety quickly identify some techniques to work through tough times. For example, if someone is suffering from an anxiety or panic attack, a physical reminder of possible relaxation techniques could be very beneficial.
However, as someone who has degrees in the field and works in the field, I had a remarkable amount of concern over this pamphlet. I will try to concisely list these for future readers. Firstly, the author starts the pamphlet by explaining "Nazzology," which is, "the author's point of view in a manner he feels that is suitable and credible to said subject or topic." In an informational pamphlet, I do not feel that inserting your opinion is the best idea. In addition, given the topic, I would imagine that the author would like to exude an air of professionalism, which this and future statements lack. For example, the author states later, "Dealing with an asshole boss or some annoying ass coworkers. You old as hell working at McDonald's as a janitor and for this, you feel like a certified loser." These types of statements also make me concerned for those with mental health conditions, like anxiety, as it can be a potential trigger.
Furthermore, the author constantly says "in a study" or "according to one study," but then never references the actual study. There isn't even a reference page. For an informational pamphlet, I would expect references and correct information. However, I have no way of knowing if this information is correct without scouring the internet for a specific, unnamed study.
Overall, I have to give this pamphlet 1 out of 4 stars. This is given the above considerations and grammatical errors I found throughout. I wanted to give this two stars for the information provided, but the issues I found outweighed the information therein. At this time, I would not recommend this pamphlet to anyone until additional adjustments are made. I think it definitely has potential but clearly needs work.
