When I first saw the book in the review options, I did think twice as this was going to be my first ever book in the non-fiction genre. But Winning The War On Cancer: An Epic Journey Towards A Natural Cure by Sylvie Beljanski did astound me at many instances.

The book starts off with the author giving a presentation on a wellness event about cancer and the research associated with it that is pursued by The Beljanski Foundation. While waiting for a computer and a projector to present the data, she starts the story on why a person who is neither a cancer survivor nor belongs to any scientific community, except that her parents being scientist, is giving a speech on cancer. Dr. Mirko Beljanski, her father, discovers two specific plant extracts that could kill the cancer stem cells. This was acceptable till the common public were concerned. But when the French President François Mitterrand, after his surgery for prostate cancer, lost hope on his life, Dr. Philip de Kuyper advised the president to take these life saving extracts. This helped him and led to the successful completion of the President’s term.

Exactly nine months after the president’s death, a French S.W.A.T. team showed up at the Beljanski residence as well as the laboratory, confiscating every work, products, literature collections on various research papers, computers and data, everything they got their hands on. This was because ”the idea that the integrative medicine could do far better than the official medicine was unacceptable by the officials”. This was the clear case of clash between natural methods, more on a holistic approach than the patented, established medical system of reductionistic approach. They arrested nearly every doctor, fellow researcher in association with Dr.Mirko. The author, being an attorney in New York, promised her father “to take a case on his behalf to the European Court of Human Rights, to make sure the products would continue to be available and lastly to do the research with the extracts as the research validates the quality”.

Even though we see the author has experienced a lonely life in her childhood, her sheer determination to get justice for her father is commendable. All along the book what I really liked is the unmitigated will power and the courage to take up the legacy left behind him. Even when she faces many stumbling blocks in her chosen path, she was dedicated to this cause and there was nothing to dislike in this book as such.

The book is professionally edited and thoroughly proofread. It is also laudable that the author has provided footnotes on the facts she has provided in the book along with simple definition to most of the scientific terms used. The book is set in a steady pace till the end and no foul language has been used. With simple writing and language, it is pretty much understandable even to those who do not have a science background.

I rate Winning The War On Cancer: An Epic Journey Towards A Natural Cure by Sylvie Beljanski, 4 out of 4 stars and would recommend this book to all those who have or had cancer or any other long standing illness as well as for the family members who are worried for their loved ones. I also recommend this book for those who want a good change in their present lifestyle and to those who are hoping to begin a new chapter in their life for a healthy body and mind.
