Official Review: Hard-wired To Lead by Carmela R. Nanton

Hard-wired To Lead by Carmela R. Nanton is a non-fiction book that addresses dynamics surrounding women and leadership. The author unapologetically advocates for women by voicing her opinions on leadership issues that affect women in communities and workplaces.
The book lays bare the struggles of women and the hurdles they face before obtaining the recognition and acknowledgement they rightfully deserve. It also touches on current and relevant issues that have given rise to movements that have gained traction throughout the world, such as #MeToo.
The book raises and addresses several injustices and power dynamics that women face at homes, in communities, and their workplaces. I found the chapter on the power and control Duluth model to be fitting as it aptly paints an image of the violent nature of the prevalent gender injustices. Depriving deserving women of opportunities to thrive based purely on their gender is outright malicious. The book dissects the Duluth model and holistically addresses the emotional, physical, violent, and sexual aspects used to oppress women.
What I learned from this book is that the rise of feminists and other pro-women movements is not to diminish the light, existence, or important roles played by men. It is to give women a voice and explore ways to level the playing field between women and men. It is truly disheartening that in the twenty-first century, women are still being overlooked for positions of leadership because of their gender.
Throughout the book, the author cites several useful and related books to support the statements made and the stance she takes on various topics. This showed the amount of research that went into this book and the high level of expertise possessed by the author in the subject of women, leadership, and the power dynamics at play. I liked that while the author lists the many facets that hinder women from occupying leadership positions, she equally proposes solutions.
The layout of this book gives credence to the phrase: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. The book is divided into chapters that merge seamlessly and enhance readability.
I encountered several grammatical errors. As a result, I award the book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars and recommend another round of editing. However, the grammatical errors did not deter me from enjoying the book. The book has some sexual connotations, but they are minor and not explicit or improper. There was nothing I disliked about the book.
I recommend this book to women of all ages, all races, and all nations with a special recommendation to men who are ready to take a stand against the injustices levelled against women.
