Review by milknwine_ -- Leadership by Craig B. Whelden
Clean cut and Straightforward could greatly describe the Motivational and insightful leadership book of Major General Craig B. Whelden, entitled Leadership: The Art of Inspiring People to Be Their Best .
Through experience, Whelden has shared the lessons and teachings that he had gathered and received throughout his stay on being military personnel. In the book, he had shared experiences and memories while being military personnel, and through such experiences did he share the leadership lessons and teachings that he had received and realized. Further, Whelden had cleverly formatted each chapter through an introduction, following either his experience or knowledge, then the concluding remarks about the lesson the chapter is dedicated to.
The book, Leadership, is an interesting way to learn and adapt certain leadership styles and manners. At first, I was hesitant to get the book as the military, action kind of genre does not necessarily suit my palette of book choices. However, coming into terms that such a book might prove me wrong, I could say that it certainly did as it had interestingly laid out the teachings through the association with the author's experiences and knowledge. Further, the book was cleanly edited throughout, and could I say that the choice to have spaces for quotations and putting emphasis on certain words and phrases throughout certainly helped in highlighting important and must remember pieces of advice. Moreover, once a reader had gotten the hang of continuously reading, it had become relatively easier to keep on reading and comprehending the book.
Although, there are certain downsides of the book, itself. First and foremost is the heavy association of the "lessons" on the military and the entire organization of it. While, there is the understanding that it is easier to associate the teachings on a military perspective as it had been the entire life experience of the author, themselves, it would also be helpful to provide other examples with similar learnings and experiences, or in other words, have experiences that the general public could easily relate with. Nonetheless, some chapters are leaning towards the general experiences and events that might occur to an average Joe and for that, it is simpler to digest the information being shared with the readers.
With all of these considered, the book deserves an overall 4 out of 4 stars . While there has been a relatively negative impression towards myself, it does not discredit nor deduct the overall, quality of both the content and editing of the book. Furthermore, the book had provided great insights and bits of advice for anyone and everyone. Lastly, it would be an incredible read for those who are interested in improving leadership, bonus should be those who are interested in the military or is in the military.
