Official Review: The Great Nightfall: How We Win the New ...
America faces several complex threats from different sources, which raises the question of whether the military equipment and strategies used in the past will stand up to these threats. This is what J. William Middendorf II (author's name on book cover and Amazon) discusses in The Great Nightfall: How We Win the New Cold War.
In this book, he reveals the strategies some countries are beginning to implement alongside the ones that might come into play in the future. He also explains how these things pose a threat to the safety and freedom of Americans. These countries are working tirelessly to develop their military strength, not to be on a par with America but to exceed them. He compares American weapons to some of these countries’ arsenals and examines how America will fare if war breaks out.
This book is filled with vital diplomatic information. America is a major world power, and a threat to it is a threat to world peace. World trade, economic systems, safety, and health stand at great risk if another war breaks out. Therefore, this book presents a timely warning to the powers that be to strengthen our systems and attain, in the words of the author, "peace through strength."
This book has so many factors that guarantee its authenticity. The author draws heavily from the knowledge and experience he has gained during his time as a diplomat and top official in the United States Navy. This impressive pedigree puts a ton of weight behind his words. He also includes several quotations and excerpts from reputable sources to back up his points. Finally, the reference section at the end of each chapter greatly aids the reader in further research and verification of this book's concepts. The authenticity of this work is what I like most.
The author was very detailed in his approach — he categorically stated his points and backed them up with expert opinion and proof. He carefully explained everything he said without leaving any statement hanging. He was also careful not to bring up accusations against any country or group of people without reasonable facts. He also added several diagrams and indicated their sources to buttress his points further. This detailed delivery made it easier for me to flow with the narrative.
The only issue I had with this book is the abundance of military language and descriptions. Though a layperson might enjoy this book, it would appeal more to a person with a background in military matters or sufficient interest in it. Though the core message was for everybody, those with no interest in military systems and weapons may not easily enjoy it. I could flow with this book, regardless, and I didn't see this as reason enough to take away any point.
The Great Nightfall: How We Win the New Cold War was very well thought out and organized. It was also exceptionally edited — I did not find a single error. I'd rate it 4 out of 4 stars and recommend it to anybody interested in America's military systems compared to China and other countries.
