Quite often, business books focus on very specific aspects of the varied diverse activities, such as marketing, finance, and human resources, which go into daily business management. This is certainly not the case with Inside the Mind of a Successful CEO by Dr. David V. Mastran. Rather than comprehensive, this book is more like all-encompassing. The author writes from expertise learned over a long and varied career, starting as a West Point graduate military officer and Vietnam veteran, to senior federal government executive and eventually, the founder of both of a large health and human services provider and an online music education company focused on younger children.

The book is very professionally written, edited, and has a well thought out format. The information presented should appeal to a wide audience in the business world, from entry-level manager to CEO, as well as entrepreneurs that may have little formal business education, and I rate this book four out of four stars. While fundamental management concepts are concisely covered- the author presents the contributions of Frederick Taylor, Dale Carnegie, W. Edwards Deming, and Peter Drucker in one page, he keeps the book on course to provide practical insight and best practices. This is what I found to be the most noteworthy aspect of the book. The author manages to write with a light touch on what can be dry, complicated subjects, and appropriate and entertaining quotes and cartoons are liberally sprinkled throughout the book. The few references to West Point and combat situations were entirely relevant, especially in the sections on crisis management and dealing with pressure.

I found the emphasis on problem identification and solving, and decision making to be most valuable. These are areas that do not readily lend themselves to easily expressed solutions and are often glossed over in other business books. Most importantly, while scientific and financial concepts are thoroughly presented, the author continuously focuses on the human elements of the “art and science” of management.

Other subjects not normally covered in business books, including boards of directors, mergers, and acquisitions, and going public, are presented with practical advice based on the author's experiences. There are even extremely helpful chapters on interaction with Information Technology and Risk Management, tailored to help managers who do not have detailed knowledge of these highly specialized functions.

This book is a great primer for business students and small business owners, and ideal for military members and veterans transitioning into the business world. It will be valuable to anyone working their way through the management ranks and serve well as a desk reference for C-level executives.
