HEALING: Beyond Pills & Potions is a medical nonfiction book by author Steve Bierman, M.D. The author opens the book with his realization that Western medicine often treats symptoms instead of addressing the underlying cause of illness and pain. He describes his experience researching and learning about a broader range of healing tools. He then introduces the reader to many communication tools to use during information delivery to patients, including utilizing direct suggestion as an authority figure, using indirect permissive language, and employing gestures and body language to underscore ideas. A discussion of the patient-caregiver relationship is followed by a blueprint for how and why caregivers can make use of trance or hypnosis for patients. The author provides a script for how to handle interactions with patients in specific situations.

I appreciated the author’s medical degree and extensive medical experience. The author's background provides credibility for his research and theories. I also enjoyed the author’s elegant writing style. He has a rare ability to craft exquisitely clear explanations of complex ideas. I also noted that this book is well-edited and professionally proofread. The book's structure adds to its overall simplicity and readability as well. The author introduces the reader to a concept or practice; he then demonstrates how this theory can be used in a brief, narrative case study. These case studies also provide important validation of the author’s claims.

I have no medical background or experience, but I found this book engaging and understandable. I was able to take away several helpful communication tools that could be useful in any number of situations. For example, one of the author’s communication tools (or “pearls,” as he refers to them) is to communicate through positive language. This reinforces positive outcomes in a patient's mind.

There was nothing I specifically disliked while reading. I ran into a long chapter in the middle of the book that addresses the nature of symptom formation; I found this section to be interesting but a bit difficult. My lack of medical knowledge forced me to slow down and read carefully to understand some of the more detailed explanations.

I would recommend HEALING: Beyond Pills & Potions primarily to readers who work as medical caregivers. The author directly addresses people in the medical field throughout much of the book. However, I believe anyone interested in medical science, neuroscience, or communication skills would benefit from reading this book. Sensitive readers may be offended by limited profanity throughout this book. I would also note that readers who are unwilling to consider methods of healing that are beyond the scope of traditional Western drugs and surgery may find this an uncomfortable read.

This book presents a clear, evidence-based argument for a more expansive approach to healing. It is well-written and professionally edited. I give HEALING: Beyond Pills & Potions a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

Beyond ancient methods of medical prescription and intervention, that is very accurate that time. Then modern medical experts today also studied and applied the ancient methods to cure the curable and incurable diseases.
