The FODMAP Solution

Post by CONSTARA »

And yet another recent review:

A good temporary plan for equalizing your system if you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Doctors are stating this is not a long term plan for the average person. However, if you are having any difficulties in the digestive tract this is an excellent way to alleviate the pain and determine if you do indeed have an issue that needs to be dealt with.

FODMAP stands for:

F: Fermentation of carbohydrates which occurs in either the small or large intestine. Most of the time, this is a normal process in healthy people. However, in IBS patients, it causes a heck of a lot more pain than normal. The thought is, that, less fermentation means less pain.

O: Stands for a very large Greek word that means sugar, fructans and galactans.

D: Stands for Disaccharides, means: saccharide = sugar.

M: Is for Monosaccharides = again, more sugar, only in this reference it’s about fructose.

P: Polyols = Sugar alcohols, which apparently nobody, healthy or otherwise is able to absorb properly, which sit in the system and are free to ferment bacteria at will.

Yeah, we can all have small difficulties now and then with use or overuse of foods on these lists. We all experience digestive problems like diarrhea, constipation, gas, pain and bloating, especially when we eat certain foods to excess. We know this.

To test if you are having a FODMAP intolerance, you remove those items that are known to cause the most damage from your diet and wait for your body’s reaction to the change. You allow your system 4-6 weeks off of the foods as listed and give your system time to equalize. Only then do you start to add the old items back to the diet. There is a whole list of foods to eat which will cause your system no problems, in the meantime.

This probably one of the most boring reads from the standpoint of technical jargon. They spend most of their time giving you the greek words for sugar in it's many technical term forms. They could have summed it in about two sentences, because we all know the truth, we just like to hear the hooplah!

The plain and simple truth is: Sugar in it's many forms is bad, some more so than others. And moderation in all things 'man made' will help you stay alive! Plain and simple!
