Official Review: It Takes A Village To Raise A Child
Being an educator and a father of two beautiful children, Beatus Jr. and Bernice, aged 9 and 8 respectively, I understand what Toni Pride is talking about in her book It Takes A Village To Raise A Child. The author is thinking logically and practically. I would say that the author presented the ideal society to raise a child in. One that not only nurtures but also protects and teaches a child to become a good citizen and a responsible adult.
The book is short, only 19 pages long. The five chapters, however, talked about all that a child needs from society to become a balanced and respected society member. According to the author, a society/village has four major support groups that help a child develop well. These are the church, the school, the neighborhood, and the hospital. Toni called these the church village, the school village, the community village, and health care providers.
Anyone can understand that it takes every aspect of life and everyone involved in it to turn an infant into a respected adult. And regarding the structure of the modern society, surely parents need to know that their role is finite. Peers, teachers, health care workers, public servants, other professionals and neighbors, coaches, and religious leaders have a part too. The author presented herself as an example and even mentioned her achievements, which she wouldn’t have accomplished if it wasn’t for “the village”.
I liked this book because it made me think about the village around my children. I thought to myself, “Why didn’t I think like this ten years ago?” However, I think it is not too late. Because of the bad things happening to children now at the hands of society, parents have every right to trust no one with their children's welfare. Yes, not everyone has your child's best interests at heart. I believe that this should probably change, though. However, whoever you entrust your child with should qualify a particular criterion. There are a lot of bad people out there. Parents, therefore, should be vigilant and involve themselves in every step and every stage of their children’s lives.
I loved the book. The author did an outstanding job with it, as I couldn’t find a single thing to dislike in it. I believe professionals did the editing of this book as I encountered no errors. Adults and young adults alike can enjoy this book. It is an eye-opener. It made me go back to when I was little and think about the village that brought me up.
After considering everything, I rate It Takes A Village To Raise A Child by Toni Pride 4 out of 4 stars.
